The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) was published in the EU Official Journal on June 13, 2024, and takes effect in several phases.

Key Milestones

August 2024: Publication & Entry into Force The regulation was officially published. All transition periods start from this date.

February 2025: Prohibitions Apply (Art. 5) Six months after entry into force, prohibited AI practices (Art. 5) become applicable. These include subliminal manipulation, exploitation of vulnerabilities, social scoring, and workplace emotion recognition.

August 2025: Obligations for GPAI Models Rules for General Purpose AI (like GPT-4, Gemini, Claude) take effect.

August 2026: Transparency Obligations (Art. 50) The most important deadline for website operators: All AI-generated content must be visibly and machine-readably labeled.

August 2027: High-Risk AI Systems The strictest rules for high-risk AI become fully applicable.
